The International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations under the auspices of UNESCO operates in the field of documentation, preservation, and promotion of cultural heritage and its diverse expressions, in accordance with UNESCO’s cultural policy framework and the relevant legal and policy documents of Mongolia. Within this mandate, the IISNC organized the launch of the book Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mongolian Culture by S. Dulam on March 21, 2025, at the National Library of Mongolia.
This dictionary is the result of fifty-five years of research conducted by Professor S. Dulam, Doctor of Philology, People’s Teacher of Mongolia, and Honored Scholar of Science. Drawing on extensive ethnolinguistic fieldwork among Mongolian communities in Mongolia, the People’s Republic of China, and the Russian Federation, the author has compiled key cultural concepts essential to both the daily life and life-cycle rituals of the Mongolian people.
The dictionary serves as an important contribution to the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage of the Mongolian nomadic civilization, which spans centuries. It aims to document and preserve traditional knowledge and expressions, promote public awareness, and foster a sense of national pride rooted in shared cultural values.
