The international conference “Nomadic Futures: Cultural Rights, Knowledge Systems, Climate Resilience” was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from 19-21 August 2026. Organized by the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations (IISNC) under the auspices of UNESCO, in collaboration with the University of Oxford, the conference was held in the framework of UNCCD COP17 and the UN International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026).

The conference brought together interdisciplinary perspectives on the cultural rights of nomadic peoples, traditional knowledge systems, pastoralism, land rights, youth and cultural continuity, traditional ecological knowledge, and resilience to climate change.

As an outcome of these discussions, the “Taij Khairkhan Declaration on Nomadic Futures” was formally presented to B. Bat-Erdene, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth of Mongolia.

The Declaration brings together shared commitments and recommendations aimed at safeguarding nomadic cultures, traditional knowledge, pastoral livelihoods, and the rights of nomadic peoples, while strengthening their resilience and ensuring a sustainable future for nomadic communities in a changing climate.
