Within the framework of the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026) and the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) being held in Ulaanbaatar, the international conference “Nomadic Futures: Cultural Rights, Knowledge Systems and Climate Resilience” was successfully held in Ulaanbaatar from 19-21 August 2026.
The conference brought together leading, emerging, and young researchers from 34 institutions across 20 countries, alongside representatives of international organizations, as well as pastoralists.
Over the course of three days, participants presented research on nomadic and pastoral communities across five continents, covering regions including Inner Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, the Arctic, Europe, and the Andes. Discussions focused on the future of nomadic peoples, cultural rights, traditional knowledge systems, mobility, and resilience in the face of climate change and contemporary challenges.
As an outcome of the conference, researchers and pastoralists jointly adopted a Declaration, intended to be submitted to the Parties of UNCCD COP17. The Declaration was formally presented to Bat-Erdene.B, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth of Mongolia, for onward consideration.
In parallel with the conference programme, academic knowledge and research findings are being shared with the wider public at the “Nomadic” World Cultural Festival through the World Nomads Ger Cinema and a series of roundtable discussions, creating a space for dialogue between researchers, pastoralists, cultural practitioners, and the public.
