The 2026 Summer School, jointly organized by the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations (IISNC), under the auspices of UNESCO, and J. F. Oberlin University, Japan, was successfully held from 17–24 August 2026.
Held under the framework of the cooperation agreement between the two institutions, the Summer School provided participants with an opportunity to explore Mongolian nomadic livelihoods, culture, customs, traditional knowledge, and ecosystems through a combination of academic research and hands-on field activities.
The program brought together 12 students and 2 faculty members from J. F. Oberlin University, along with researchers from Mongolia and local pastoralist communities. Participants conducted field research and practical activities, gaining first-hand experience of nomadic life and pastoralism.
The research materials and data collected during the Summer School will contribute to a trilingual publication in Mongolian, Japanese, and English, planned for publication by the end of 2026. The publication is expected to serve as a valuable international reference for research and policymaking related to traditional nomadic knowledge, pastoral livelihoods, and sustainable ways of living.
The program also provided young researchers from different backgrounds with an important opportunity to gain practical experience in nomadic pastoralism and rangeland management, while strengthening academic and institutional cooperation between Mongolia and Japan.
